Story from Knox County Sheriff Don Henery

Like many industries, we’ve faced workforce shortages- especially for positions that require nights, weekends, and holidays.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office has been transparent about this challenge and proactive in addressing it. With the support of the Nebraska Sheriff’s Association, and no objection from Nebraska Jail Standards, Brown County Sheriff Brent Diebler, Custer County Sheriff Dan Osmond, and I (Don Henery) testified that before the Unicameral in support of LB1195, sponsored by Senator Tanya Storer.

This legislation repealed a 123-year-old statute that restricted supervision roles in jails based on gender. The outdated law limited our ability to hire qualified applicants. On April 9th , LB1195 passed by a vote of 47-1 allowing us to expand our hiring pool for dispatcher/jailer positions and strengthen our operations.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications from both men and women for dispatcher/jailer positions.
