There won’t be a public fireworks display in O’Neill this year. The O’Neill Men’s Club, which usually organizes the event, announced a few months ago that their licensed pyrotechnician wouldn’t be available. A permit holder must be present to purchase, store, and set off large fireworks, and this permit, obtained from the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office, needs to be secured in early spring before the fireworks are bought.
The Men’s Club expressed its regret at not being able to continue the display. However, they’ve offered to assist any new group interested in organizing the fireworks by providing some of the necessary equipment. The annual display was typically funded by donations gathered by the O’Neill Men’s Club and a yearly contribution from the City of O’Neill. The O’Neill Fire Department also played a crucial role, providing personnel and equipment to ensure the event’s safety.
