NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA — This summer, swimming just got safer — and more affordable. The North Central District Health Department (NCDHD) has teamed up with local pools across its nine-county region to offer two exciting programs: discounted pool season passes and a free sun safety program called Pool Cool.
Save Money on Pool Passes
After a great response to the program last year, NCDHD is offering pool season pass discounts again in 2026! Pools that are part of the Pool Cool program can offer $15 off season passes this summer.
This means families can spend more time in the water — and spend less money doing it. Check with your local pool to find out if they are participating and how to get the discount.
What Is Pool Cool?
Pool Cool is a fun sun safety program made just for kids. Did you know that skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States? The good news is that about 9 out of 10 skin cancer cases can be prevented just by protecting your skin from the sun.
Pool Cool teaches kids 8 easy sun safety tips right at the pool. Lifeguards share short, 5-minute lessons during swimming lessons to help kids learn how to have fun in the sun — safely.
Through Pool Cool, participating pools will also receive:
•Free sunscreen for swimmers and families to use at the pool
•Sun safety signs posted around the pool area
•A sun safety check of the pool to look at shade and ways to make the area safer from the sun
“Sun safety is something every family can practice. We are so excited to bring Pool Cool to our communities and make it easy for kids to learn good habits while having fun this summer.” — North Central District Health Department
How Can Families Get Involved?
It is easy! Here is what to look for at your pool this summer:
•Ask about the discounted season pass when you sign up
•Use the free sunscreen available at the pool
•Encourage your kids to listen to the Pool Cool sun safety lessons during swimming lessons
•Look for Pool Cool signs posted around the pool
