Friday, February 27, 2026, the Boyd County Board of Supervisors held an Emergency Meeting. The nature of the emergency is that the Boyd County Sheriff resigned on February 24th, 2026, with no notice to the Board, and that there was no law enforcement presence.
At the meeting on Friday, the Board appointed Matt McHale as Sheriff to fill the term of Chuck Wrede, who resigned on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. McHale has been a Holt County Deputy and will receive $5,000 per month as well as benefits, which include a $400 Stipend, $10,000 Life Insurance Policy, vision and dental for the employee and their spouse and retirement.
McHale will serve as Sheriff until the end of the term that Chuck Wrede surrendered. The term runs through December 31, 2026; however, there will be an election for the Sheriff position in November, which McHale may decide to run for.
The Nebraska State Patrol has been providing law enforcement since Tuesday, when the former Sheriff and the other employees of the Sheriff Department walked out.
