At the Boyd County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Boyd County Sheriff Chuck Wrede turned in his resignation.

In visiting with Wrede, he cited concerns on pay and health insurance as major issues in hiring employees for his department.  He had not been able to hire any new employees, which resulted in extended hours for him to cover.  Besides Wrede and his Secretary there were only part-time deputies working. Wrede stated that his secretary and part-time help also walked off their jobs with him.

In visiting with Boyd County Clerk Tracy Reiser, Wrede was the only one who had turned in his resignation to the Supervisors.

The Boyd County Board of Supervisors will hold an Emergency meeting on Friday, February 27th, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

The nature of the emergency is that the Boyd County Sheriff resigned on February 24th, 2026, with no notice to the Board, and until that vacancy is filled, there is no available and permanent law enforcement presence in Boyd County, Nebraska, which constitutes an immediate public safety threat.

The Nebraska State Patrol has indicated they will assist with law enforcement in  Boyd County until the Sheriff’s department is restored.
