LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska School Activities Association is proud to recognize Mr. Larry Eilers of Boyd County Public Schools as this week’s Above and Beyond Award nominee. For over 40 years, Larry has been a constant source of service, dedication, and heart in the Boyd County and Lynch communities. Whether driving a bus, fixing a boiler, volunteering as a fireman, or helping to build a new classroom, Larry has always been the person everyone could count on to get the job done—with quiet humility and deep pride in his school.
Larry officially retired in 2024 after serving 37 years as a custodian and bus driver for Lynch Public and Boyd County Schools. But “retirement” hasn’t slowed him down. He continues to drive activity buses, getting students safely to and from games, contests, and events across the state. It’s a role he’s fulfilled for over four decades—getting every child home safe, with a wave, a story, and a smile.
More than just a driver or custodian, Larry has built strong and meaningful relationships with generations of students. Kids light up when they see him behind the wheel. Perhaps no moment captures his impact better than the sight of Brody Mellendorf—a student with special needs—running with his walker all the way across the gym just to get to Larry. That kind of bond cannot be faked or forced. It is built over years of care, kindness, and trust.
Larry has been there for it all—state championships, late-night repairs, long road trips, and everyday moments that have left lasting impressions. He’s been the behind-the-scenes hero who never asks for recognition but deserves every bit of it. Call anyone in Boyd County and ask about Larry Eilers, and you’ll hear the same thing: “He’s a legend.”
This nomination is extra special, submitted by his son—a testament to not just what kind of school employee Larry has been, but what kind of man, father, and role model he is. In every sense, Larry Eilers has gone above and beyond. He is the kind of person who makes schools strong, communities tight-knit, and students feel truly seen and valued.
The NSAA is honored to shine a light on Mr. Larry Eilers—a true icon of Boyd County—and thank him for a lifetime of meaningful service and impact.
