Over Labor Day weekend, Spencer, Nebraska had the honor of hosting The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.  The baseball field became the site of a meaningful tribute commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.

The exhibit opened at noon on Thursday, August 28 and remained in place until 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2. Throughout that time, visitors walked the length of the reflective, black panels, bearing the names of more than 58,000 Americans who lost their lives or remain missing in action. Open around the clock, the Wall provided a solemn space for reflection, education, and paying respects to our Vietnam Veterans.  For many, the visit was not just a remembrance of the past, but also a moment of healing and gratitude for sacrifices made.

Approximately 1,800 school students/sponsors, community members, veterans, families, and visitors from across the region came together to walk along the panels, trace the names of loved ones, and pause in remembrance. The attendance and quiet reverence at the site spoke volumes about the respect felt for those who served.

The success of hosting The Moving Wall was made possible by the dedication of local volunteers, businesses, organizations, and countless individuals who gave their time and resources. Thanks to the many who donated funds, making this event a reality.  Thank you also goes to the more than 175 volunteers who signed up and showed up to help ensure the success of the event. Over 50 of those volunteers served in multiple capacities or worked multiple shifts, a true testament to the generosity and spirit of our local community.

We are proud to have played a part in honoring our nation’s veterans. Hosting The Moving Wall served as a reminder that freedom is never free, and the sacrifices of America’s veterans must never be forgotten.  As the exhibit continues its journey to other communities, the memory of its time here will remain etched in the hearts of all who visited.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this momentous event possible!
