At approximately 6:30 PM on September 3, the Chambers Volunteer Fire Department was paged for a motorhome pulling a pickup on fire, located two miles north of Chambers Corner on Highway 281. The fire was first reported by department members who happened to be driving by.
Initial attempts with fire extinguishers were unsuccessful, and crews were unable to unhook the pickup or move the camper before fire trucks arrived. Within minutes, the fire spread to the RV, resulting in a total loss of the motorhome and all personal belongings inside.
With assistance from local law enforcement, Chambers Fire shut down Highway 281 for approximately two hours. One lane was reopened around 9:00 PM, and the highway was fully open again by approximately 11:00 PM. CVFD responded with Trucks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 99-1, utilizing approximately 6,000 gallons of water to bring the fire under control. Chambers 99-1 also transported the RV occupants to O’Neill for lodging.
The Chambers Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank local law enforcement and AJ Towing for their assistance in getting the scene cleared and the highway reopened.
