A Nebraska meat processing facility will serve as the backdrop to the ceremonial passage of a bill aimed at protecting a significant cornerstone of the state’s ag industry – beef production. Shamrock Locker, a family-owned operation in O’Neill, opened just last year. Governor Jim Pillen will join Sen. Barry DeKay at the facility to celebrate LB246 becoming law on Thursday, July 17, at Noon.
Introduced on the Governor’s behalf, the new legislation prohibits the manufacture, distribution and sale of lab-grown meat in Nebraska. LB246 builds on Gov. Pillen’s effort to protect producers and consumers from the fake meat industry, which he initiated through Executive Order 24-09.
Nebraska is a leading beef producer, consistently ranking high in cattle slaughter and exports. In 2024, the state processed 6.8 million head of cattle, more than any other state. It also leads the nation in beef and veal exports, sending over $2 billion of high-quality products to international markets.
During the bill signing, Shamrock Locker will also host a public luncheon, serving a pulled pork meal with two sides for $15.
