Niobrara – The NVC Basketball Tournament concluded on Saturday, February 7th after an amazing week of basketball!
The final day started with the Girls Consolation match between Niobrara/Verdigre and North Central. The Lady Cougars played great defense, holding the Lady Knights to just 4 1st half points. North Central fought back hard but fell just short of a comeback. Niobrara/Verdigre brings home a 3rd place finish with a 36-28 victory!
The Boys Consolation match saw a rematch between two familiar opponents: CWC and Stuart. Very similar to the first game – CWC’s defense played formidably in the 1st half and made things difficult for the Broncos. Stuart never gave up, fighting back til the end! CWC was able to weather the storm and defeat Stuart, 45-40, finishing the NVC Boys Tournament with a 3rd place finish!
It was a battle of the 1 and 2 seeds for both the Girls and Boys NVC Championships. Santee and EPPJ battled for the NVC Girls Championship, the Lady Wolfpack were hot out the gates, and never looked back. Santee never gave up but EPPJ would not be denied, defeating the Lady Warriors 67-43 and bringing the Girls NVC Championship back to Elgin!
To wrap up the evening, it was a rematch from last year’s Boys NVC Championship – EPPJ vs St. Mary’s. For the first 3 quarters both teams exchanged runs back and forth, neither team giving up much ground. But, as St. Mary’s has done throughout the season, the Cardinals were able to surge forward in the 4th quarter and get enough separation to defeat the Wolfpack, 63-47! The win gives the Cardinals back-to-back NVC Championships!
An amazing tournament culminated after an amazing week with yet another NVC Final, and KBRX would like to congratulate every team competing on their performances and doing an amazing job of showcasing the talent throughout our area!
