
O’NEILL – The Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus hosted the second and final day of the Class D State Golf Tournament on Thursday, May 29th!
The teams competing in the Class D Boys State Golf Tournament were Archangels Catholic, Bloomfield, Creighton, CWC, Deshler, Hitchcock County, Hi-Line, Johnson-Brock, Loomis, Neligh-Oakdale, North Central, North Platte St. Pat’s, Overton, Sandy Creek, and Sutherland.
The Class D State Champion is the Creighton Bulldogs as they finished with a team score of 683! The Bulldogs finished 17 strokes better than runner-up Loomis and were led by Calvin Wilmes who never left the top of the leaderboard for Creighton. Wilmes tied as the individual state champion after shooting 10 over par in two rounds of golf. Wilmes and Micah Gerlach of Cambridge had a playoff for the gold medal, and Wilmes won it in a four-hole playoff. Wilmes was the lone Bulldog to medal for Creighton in their pursuit of the State Championship!
The North Central Knights were just one stroke away from being the team runner-up and ended up finishing in 3rd place in Class D. North Central had two Knights finish in the top 10! Leading the way for North Central was Zak Swanson as he shot 21 over par to place 6th. Not far behind was Keian Fischer as he shot a 22 over par to finish in a tie for 7th place.
Neligh-Oakdale finished in 7th place as a team with a score of 732. The Warriors had one medalist as Corbin Hoefer finished in a tie for 13th place shooting 25 over par.
Finally, the CWC Renegades finished in a tie for 10th place as a team with a score of 734. The Renegades also had one medalist on the day as William Jesse finished in a tie for 13th place shooting 25 over par.
Moving over to the Class B State Golf Tournament that was hosted in Gering, Nebraska, the O’Neill Eagles had two golfers competing, but neither finished in the top 15 individually. James Eby led the Eagles as he finished in a tie for 29th place shooting a 159 in two days of golf. Logan Brabec ended in a tie for 57th place after shooting 27 over par in the two combined rounds.
