Lancers Dominate at the DWU Snow Tiger Open

MOUNT  MARTY – The Lancer track and field teams competed at the DWU Snow Tiger Open at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD on December 14. The Lancers dominated the competition from Dakota Wesleyan and Dakota State and triumphed over the unattached athletes by claiming nine event titles on the women’s side and four on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, junior Zelie Sorensen claimed three event titles by winning the 60 (7.87), 200 (25.73), and 4×400 relay (4:08.26) that also featured freshman Hannah Killinger and juniors Alexis Even and Josey Wahlstrom. Sorensen led the Lancers to a 1-2 finish in both the 60 and 200 where Even earned runner-up finishes in both events (8.00 and 26.40, respectively). Sorensen set the Mount Marty record in the 200 M Dash and had a PR in both the 200 and 60 M Dash!

The women claimed 1-2 finishes in three other events. Junior Paige Millikan won the long jump (16′ 2.5″) and freshman Rachel Erk finished 2nd (16′ 0.5″). Freshman Paige Clausen won the pole vault (11′ 3.75″) and Mya Zohner finished 2nd (10′ 10″). Sophomore Alexis Gosch won the 3,000 (14:05.10) and freshman Isabella Ramsgard finished right behind in 2nd (14:05.16).

Senior Ashinee George won the 60H (9.66) and led the Lancers to a sweep of the top three places. Junior Andrea Sucha finished 2nd (9.90) and junior Macala Hood finished 3rd (10.06). Sucha also won the high jump (5′ 1.75″) and finished 2nd in the triple jump (34′ 7″). George and Hood joined seniors Lexa Burtzlaff and Lauren Mitchell on the ‘B’ 4×400 relay which finished 2nd (4:22.64).

On the men’s side, freshman Austin Gobel won the 200 (22.63) and led the Lancers to a sweep of the top three places. Freshman Ryen Nolley finished 2nd (23.30) and freshman Osiel Cantu finished 3rd (23.47). Junior Jacob Kueny won the 600 (1:26.07) and also led the Lancers to a top-three sweep. Junior Carl Massa finished 2nd (1:28.61) and junior Tague Tvedt finished 3rd (1:31.39). Owen Koontz won the 1,000 (2:40.97).

Senior Logan Ferrari won the 3,000 (9:07.54) and led the Lancers to a top-five sweep. Freshman Joseph Cross placed 2nd (9:23.45), Koontz placed 3rd (9:37.07), senior David Phillips placed 4th (12:15.13), and sophomore Alan Santiago placed 5th (12:19.07). Ferrari also placed 2nd in the mile (4:24.54) followed by Cross in 3rd (4:41.23).

The men also claimed runner-up finishes in four other events. The 4×400 relay composed of Gobel, freshman Christopher Munoz-Sturgeon, Nolley, and Massa ran 3:32.36, junior Michael Beyer pole vaulted 13′ 3.5″, Cantu ran 8.70 in the 60H, and Gobel ran 6.97 in the 60.

The Lancers will resume competition in the new year at home at the Mount Marty Open at the Ruth Donohoe First Dakota Fieldhouse on January 11.
