O’Neill – West Holt Junior, Felycia Kerkman, and O’Neill Senior, Grady Welke, have been named KBRX’s Stadium Sports Top Dog Athletes of the Week!
After finishing as State Runner-up last season Felycia Kerkman had a lot of motivation down at the State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska to get the job done, and she did just that! Felycia won two close matches to get to the Semifinals, advanced to the Class B 125 Championship with a Major Decision, and eventually beat the 2 seed: Emma Glendy of Columbus Lakeview by decision 2-1 in the 1st tie breaker! Felycia finishes her amazing season 51-2 and as a state champ!
Grady Welke started as the Class C 215 1 seed and showed why through the first three matches! he earned his first two victories by Major Decision, and made it to the Championship with a victory by Fall in the Semifinals! Welke faced the 2 seed in Cole Vorderstrasse of Thayer Central, and it was a matchup that lived up to the billing! After a scoreless 1st period, both wrestlers traded points with escapes in the 2nd and 3rd. The match went into overtime and, with 6 seconds remaining, Grady was able to get into an advantageous position through a scramble and record a takedown, earing the Class C 215 State Championship, 4-1 Sudden Victory Decision! Grady finishes his senior season 53-2 and as a state champion!
