O’Neill Softball Competes at Wayne Invitational

Wayne – The O’Neill Lady Eagle Softball team competed at the Wayne Softball Invitational over the weekend and were able to secure their first win of the season, finishing the tournament with a 1-2 record.

In their first match they fell to Twin River, 10-4 in 5 innings. The Lady Eagles produced 8 hits and 2 errors. O’Neill struck first, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning. But Twin River was able to respond with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st. The Lady Titans scored an additional 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, before both teams exchanged runs over the course of the next few innings. O’Neill scored their last run in the top of the 5th, trailing 6-4 going into the bottom of the 5th inning when Twin River scored 4 runs and ended the game, 10-4.

O’Neill left the loss in the rear-view mirror though as the O’Neill Lady Eagles went on to defeat the Arlington Lady Eagles by a score of 9-3. Very similar to the first game, both teams scored in the first inning. O’Neill took a 3-1 lead all the way to the top of the 4th inning where the offense erupted for 6 runs. Arlington scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th inning to extend the game, but no runs were scored in the 6th inning, giving O’Neill their first win of the season! O’Neill scored their 9 runs on 10 hits and committed no errors!

The Lady Eagles wrapped up the Wayne Invitational taking on Centura, losing 7-3. The Lady Eagles struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the 1st inning. Centura scored one run in the bottom of the 1st inning, two runs in the bottom of the 2nd, and three runs in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 6-2 lead. That held til the top of the 5th inning, O’Neill scored one run to bring the score to 6-3. But, Centura scored an additional run in the bottom of the 5th inning, ending the game with a 7-3 final score.

The Lady Eagles set their sights to this week as they take on Wayne tomorrow, Tuesday, August 26th (1350AM, 99.9FM, and KBRX.com) and then they will travel to Ponca on Thursday, August 28th.
