O’Neill Runners Participate in 129th Annual Boston Marathon

BOSTON – The Boston Marathon is an annual 26.2-mile marathon race hosted by several cities and towns in greater Boston in eastern Massachusetts. It is traditionally held on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday of April. The event began in 1897 and was inspired by the success of the first marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics. The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world’s best-known road racing events.

This year the Boston Marathon had 28,765 runners competing including 3 runners from O’Neill. The 3 runners from O’Neill were Leah Chohon, Jake Reiman, and Brock Stewart. Chohon and Reiman are twins that graduated from St. Mary’s in the class of 2008. Stewart is an O’Neill High School graduate from the 2007 class. All three were standout track & field and cross-country runners in high school.

Chohon started her race at 9:28 am and had an average pace of 7 minutes and 36 seconds. She was able to run the marathon in 3 hours, 19 minutes, and 8 seconds. Chohon finished in 9,864th place out of nearly 29,000 runners. In the female division she finished in 2,156th place out of 12,427 total female runners. In her age division, Chohon finished in 1,701st place out of 5,537!

Reiman started his race at 9:04 am and had an average pace of 7 minutes and 6 seconds. He was able to run the marathon in 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 58 seconds. Reiman finished in 5,967th place out of 28,765 runners. In the male division he finished in 5,294th place out of 16,266 total male runners. In his age division, Reiman finished 3,304th place out of 5,694!

Stewart started his race at 9:07 am and had an area best average pace of 6 minutes and 46 seconds. He was able to run the marathon in under 3 hours as he finished with a time of 2 hours, 57 minutes, and 14 seconds. Stewart finished in 3,799th place total and 3,523rd place out of 16,266 male runners! In his age division, Stewart finished in 2,609th place out of 5,694.

Winning the Boston Marathon was Kenyan John Korir at 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 45 seconds which was good for an average mile of 4 minutes and 46 seconds. Conner Mantz was the best American finisher as he placed 4th running in a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 8 seconds.
