An Atkinson man died Monday in a crash in south Grand Island. KBRX received this information from Grand Island Police Captain Jim Duering.
Merle Liewer, age 75, of Atkinson, NE was driving a black Freightliner semi, pulling tandem fertilizer tanks, northbound on Highway 281 around 11:15 am Monday morning. A 2020 Ford F150 pickup driven by Nicholas Monferdini, age 24, of Grand Island, NE was southbound on Highway 281 in the left-hand turning lane to turn left onto Highway 34.
The pickup turned left in front of the semi and the semi tried to take evasive action swerving to the right to avoid the truck. The semi struck the pickup in the passenger side front quarter, the semi then went off the road to the north and east and rolled onto the drivers’ side. Merle Liewer was pronounced dead at the scene. Monferdini, the driver of the pickup was taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries. Investigators are working to determine which vehicle had the right of way.
Funeral Services for Merle Liewer will be Friday, January 8, 2020, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Atkinson. Visitation will be Thursday, January 7, 2020, from 4 pm to 8 pm with a 7 pm Prayer Service. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Atkinson. Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson is in charge of arrangments.
