Boyd County 4-H Public Speaking Contest Held

The following Boyd County 4-Her’s were awarded ribbons in the 2018 Boyd County 4-H Public Speaking Contest, held on March 27, 2018 at the Boyd County Courthouse in Butte.

Youth from 5 to 18 have an opportunity to participate in the 4-H Public Speaking program from county to state levels. 4-H members in three divisions, Junior (8 to 10 years of age) Intermediate (11 to 13 years of age) and Senior (14 to 18 years of age) were required to prepare an original speech about 4-H. 4-H Clover Kid members who are ages 5-7 are eligible to participate in the Non-Original Reading Category as well as the Pledge of Allegiance and the 4-H Pledge.

In the Public Service Announcement category 4-H members in each division were required to write a 60 second radio spot promoting 4-H and by using the theme “4-H Grown”.

The 4-H Public Speaking Contest is sponsored by the Nebraska Rural Radio Network, which includes KRVN, KNEB, and KTIC. They provide the ribbons, $25 cash award for the top four winners in the Senior Division of the Regional Contests and special awards for the state speech and PSA winners.

Ribbons and awards will be handed out at the 4-H Jamboree in the Fall.

Results are as follows:

Clover Kid Non-Original Reading
Kayl Finnegan read “Pancakes?”, and “For Sale” and Ava Garwood read “Mother Doesn’t Want a Dog”. They both received Clover Kid Participant Ribbons.

Junior Division Speech
Cora Roth gave a speech on “Sewing Safety Tips”; Elizabeth Bernt’s speech was about “Oh the Places You Can Go with 4-H”; Grace Finnegan’s speech was on “Baking in a Peanut-Allergy Household”; and Adam Bernt gave his speech on “Why I Joined 4-H and I Think You Should Too!”. They received all received purple ribbons.

Intermediate Division Speech
Robert Roth gave a speech on “4-H and the Family Farm” and he received a blue ribbon.

Former 4-H’ers have said that participation in the 4-H Public Speaking program has helped them develop skills that have benefited them in high school, college and on the job. By learning how to present a speech youth develop organizational skills as well as communication skills. Being able to present your ideas effectively helps build confidence.

Thanks go to our judge for the contest, Carol Eilers of Spencer. She congratulated them on giving great readings and speeches.

Advancing to the Regional Speech Contest are Cora Roth, Elizabeth Bernt, Adam Bernt in the Junior Division and Robert Roth in the Intermediate Division. The Regional Speech Contest will be held on May 24, 2018 at Wayne State College in Wayne.
