In fulfilling its responsibility to optimize the health and healing of every Veteran, VA is currently embracing the opportunity to moving away from a problem-based disease healthcare approach to a patient centered focus.  To accomplish this, VHA created the Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation.  During the month of October, the O'Neill Outreach Clinic will be supporting the Veterans Affairs efforts in Patient Centered Care.  This new office became operational at the end of 2010.  It is charged with making sure VA tranforms from physician-centered care to personalized, proactive, patient centered care based on relationships--relationships built on trust and committed to positive results over the Veteran's lifetime.  Veterans are encouraged to stop by the clinic to learn about the services offered at the O'Neill Outreach Clinic and to share feedback with VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System's leadership about their health care experiences.

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who have never smoked. It is important to test your home for the presence of radon. Testing your home is simple. North Central District Health Department has free test kits available. Flu activity has been rapidly increasing in Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services has reported two flu related deaths so far & an increase in the number of hospitalizations for people with influenza-like illnesses.  The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is to get a flu shot.  It is not too late to get a flu shot if you have not already received one.  Flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older.  Some people are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu, such as young children, older people, people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, neurologic conditions, and certain other long term health conditions & pregnant women.  After you receive a flu shot it takes about 2 weeks for your body to build immunity so get your flu shot as soon as possible.  This public service announcement is brought to you by the friendly people at North Central District Health Department and this radio station.

The O'Neill Police Department has partnered with North Central District Health Department to bring a resource to the community. The citizens of Holt County and the surrounding areas have a new resource for the disposal of unused, expired and unwanted medications. A MedReturn unit is a permanent receptacle for disposal of medicines. Prescription medications and over-the-counter medicines can be brought to the O'Neill Police Department at 317 South 4th St, Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm for disposal.  The MedReturn unit will not accept needles, hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans, inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, or liquids.  The permanent disposal site makes it easy for people to dispose of their unwanted medications without waiting for a Drug Take Back Day. It is a safe, simple, secure and environmentally friendly way to help law enforcement agencies and communities collect unwanted or expired household medication, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and unused pharmaceuticals. Do not flush medicines down the sink or toilet unless information is provided specifically instructing you to do so. Do not give your medicine to friends. Doctors prescribe medications based on a person's specific symptoms and medical history. A medicine that works for you could be dangerous for someone else. This resource is funded through a grant from Region 4 Behavioral Health Systems. For information you can contact the O'Neill Police Department at (402) 336-1313, or North Central District Health Department at (402) 336-2406.If you have questions and suggestions, please contact me at: ann@ncdhd.ne.gov or phone at: 402-336-2406.
