Atkinson Head Start 2014/2015 School Year

The Atkinson Head Start Center is taking applications for the 2014/2015 school year.  Clients must bring copy of income verification documents (most current income tax form, or a year's worth of paycheck stubs etc.) to attach to the completed application form.
Children must be 3-4 years old to be eligible.  Children with disabilities are also encouraged to apply.  It is not necessary for children to be present for the application process.
Your cooperation in coming to the Head Start Center to put in your application will be appreciated.  For more information call the Head Start Staff at 402-925-2058 or stop in at 406 East 2nd Street Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Head Start is a comprehensive child development program sponsored by Central Nebraska Community Services, Loup City, NE.


Join area communities in celebrating Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 1st in Atkinson.  If you live too far from your child's school, here's what you can do, Drive part of the way, then park and walk your child the rest of the way.  Walking your child to school is a great way to help your child learn and practice safe walking skills.



The Stuart American Legion Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 2nd has been postponed to Thursday, October 9th at the same time.

Join area communities in celebrating Walk to School Day on Thursday, October 2nd in O'Neill.  If you live too far from the school then drive part way and walk your child the rest of the way to school.  Walking to school is a great way to promote health, identify safer routes for walking and improve the air quality.


Tri-County Bank will be sponsoring a tailgate party October 3rd at the West Holt vs Ainsworth football game starting at 5:30.  Serving walking tacos. Proceeds go to the West Holt Booster Club.

Fall Festival dinner, bakesale and some crafts at the Inman Community Church from 5-7:30pm, spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert, coffee and tea all for $6.

Due to a miss print the open house at the Shannon Apartments in O'Neill will not be held today, but at a later time. 


5k Run, Walk or Crawl Saturday, October 4th 2014 at Creighton Public Library, Creighton, NE Registration at 8am RUN at 9am this is for the Creighton Public Library Foundation.  To Register Call 402.358.5115 or email by September 19th to receive a t-shirt. Cost $20

Oktoberfest will be held Saturday, October 4th in Bonesteel, SD.  There will be German Food specials all day at the TeePee Cafe and Bonesteel Supper Club, a bean bag tournament, Vendor Fair at City Hall, silent auction, kids games, watermelon feed, cruise in car event, Texas Hold'Em and a 50/50 raffle drawing.  Admission is $10 and 12 and under are free. There will be live music from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m.  Come and join the fun!!



The Neligh Bloodmobile will be held Monday, October 6th at the Neligh American Legion from 10:30 to 4:30 p.m.  Call Danielle at 402-887-4321 for an appointment and remember walkins are always welcome.


The Ewing and Page Satellite Clinics will be closed on Tuesday, October 7th.


Wild Turkey Days and West Boyd FBLA have teamed up together to bring you a painting party on Sunday, October 12th.  Roni Lammers from Creative Soul will be here to help you paint "Harvest is Here" on canvas.  This painting party will take place in the multi-purpose room at the Spencer Attendance Center from 3 to 5 p.m.  Cost is $40.  Join us for a fun afternoon with lots of laughs, snacks and a picture to take home at the conclusion of the afternoon.  Go to to register.  Hurry space is limited.

The Elgin United Methodist Church will have their Annual Turkey & Ham Dinner on Sunday, October 12 with serving from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Adults $10, Children 6 to 10 $3.00 and Children 5 & Under Free.  Homemade pie is included in the meal price. For carryouts or home delivery call 402-843-8321.

The Atkinson Hay Days Committee meets every 3rd Wednesday from April through September at 7 p.m. at the Sandhills Guesthouse in Atkinson.

The Women of Cancer meets on Monday evenings at O'Neill Avera St. Anthony's Chemotherapy Room from 7 to 8 p.m.  Upcoming meeting dates are February 3rd, April 7th and June 2nd.  This is a women's support group for all cancer types.  Sharing hope and help to other women in our area. In fulfilling its responsibility to optimize the health and healing of every Veteran, VA is currently embracing the opportunity to moving away from a problem-based disease healthcare approach to a patient centered focus.  To accomplish this, VHA created the Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation.  During the month of October, the O'Neill Outreach Clinic will be supporting the Veterans Affairs efforts in Patient Centered Care.  This new office became operational at the end of 2010.  It is charged with making sure VA tranforms from physician-centered care to personalized, proactive, patient centered care based on relationships--relationships built on trust and committed to positive results over the Veteran's lifetime.  Veterans are encouraged to stop by the clinic to learn about the services offered at the O'Neill Outreach Clinic and to share feedback with VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System's leadership about their health care experiences.

The Atkinson/Stuart Food Pantry will be open on the first Monday of every month.It will be open at St. John’s Lutheran Church from 2:00-5:30 p.m. and also at the Stuart Community Church from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.

Flu activity has been rapidly increasing in Nebraska and the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services has reported two flu related deaths so far & an increase in the number of hospitalizations for people with influenza-like illnesses.  The best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu is to get a flu shot.  It is not too late to get a flu shot if you have not already received one.  Flu shots are recommended for everyone 6 months and older.  Some people are at greater risk of serious complications from the flu, such as young children, older people, people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, neurologic conditions, and certain other long term health conditions & pregnant women.  After you receive a flu shot it takes about 2 weeks for your body to build immunity so get your flu shot as soon as possible.  This public service announcement is brought to you by the friendly people at North Central District Health Department and this radio station.
The O'Neill Police Department has partnered with North Central District Health Department to bring a resource to the community. The citizens of Holt County and the surrounding areas have a new resource for the disposal of unused, expired and unwanted medications. A MedReturn unit is a permanent receptacle for disposal of medicines. Prescription medications and over-the-counter medicines can be brought to the O'Neill Police Department at 317 South 4th St, Monday-Friday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm for disposal.  The MedReturn unit will not accept needles, hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans, inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, or liquids.  The permanent disposal site makes it easy for people to dispose of their unwanted medications without waiting for a Drug Take Back Day. It is a safe, simple, secure and environmentally friendly way to help law enforcement agencies and communities collect unwanted or expired household medication, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and unused pharmaceuticals. Do not flush medicines down the sink or toilet unless information is provided specifically instructing you to do so. Do not give your medicine to friends. Doctors prescribe medications based on a person's specific symptoms and medical history. A medicine that works for you could be dangerous for someone else. This resource is funded through a grant from Region 4 Behavioral Health Systems.
