(11/21/08) KBRX SPORTS -- Coach Brock Eichelburger said before the kick of the D2 Football Finals that Ewing need to force and cash in on turnovers and prevent Humphrey St. Francis from going on long drives. Ewing took two fumbles from the Flyers and turned them both into touchdowns. They also forced the Flyers to give the ball up on downs three times and scored on all three of those oppertunities. End result, Tigers are D2 State Champions, final score Ewing 49, Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 24.

The Flyers would go four and out on their opening drive and Ewing started on the attack. The Tigers would take their first drive 36 yards on three plays in under 40 seconds. Brett Kaczor would go to the house on a three-yard touchdown run and Ewing led six-to-nothing with 9:51 to go in the first quarter.

The Flyers would take the ball back and fumble on their next play from scrimmage. Austin Kaczor would pounce on the loose ball at the Flyer 26 and five plays later Brett Kaczor would hit Austin Kaczor with a five-yard touchdown pass to push the score to 14-to-nothing with 7:52 to go in the first.

Humphrey St. Francis would take the next drive 57 yards to the Tiger eight yard line before the Ewing defense would hold on a fourth and two effort to take the ball over on downs. Ewing would march 72 yards on five plays. This time the deep threat as Brett Kaczor would hook up with Austin Kaczor again. This time covering 51 yards for the touchdown pushing the score to Ewing 21, Humphrey St. Francis 0 with 1:32 to go in the first period.

Midway into the second quarter, Ewing would make their first and nearly only mistake. After the one and only Tiger turnover, the Flyers would go 20 yards on six plays with Austin Wegener to cap it off on a three yard touchdown run to get the Flyers a little closer at 21-to-6 with 6:01 to go in the half.

Then more trouble for the Flyers. Logan Schrunk would pounce on another Flyer fumble setting up yet another Tiger score. Three plays later the Tigers get a three-yard touchdown run from Beau Fry to push the lead to 29-to-six.

The Flyers would answer back right before the halftime gun. Jameson Werner would haul in a three-yard touchdown run with just 17 seconds to go in the half to bring the Flyers back within 17 points at the half.

Second half started in disaster for the Flyers. The Flyers came on to the field late from the halftime break. The penalty cost the Flyers a 15 yard pentaly forcing them to kick from the ten yard line. Following a kick return by Switzer out across mid field to the Flyer 37, Ewing would put together a six play drive capped off on a two-yard touchdown dive by Brett Kaczor driving the Tiger lead to 37-to-12.

That would be all the Tigers would need, but the Flyers gave them another oppertunity in the third quarter.

The Flyers would again turn it over on downs and Ewing would go right to the well. Nine plays later Brett Kaczor would hit Josiah Switzer with a 19-yard touchdown pass and with 1:43 to go in the third, the Tigers led 43-to-12.

The Flyers would get a score early in the fouth when Matt Korus would carry in a two-yard touchdown bring the score back to 43-to-18 with 11:56 to go in the game.

Ewing would answer that score with another touchdown run from Brett Kaczor. This time Kaczor would score from eight yards out and Ewing led 49-to-18 with 5:27 to go.

The Flyers would score again before the final gun as Derek Classen would hit Korus with a 43-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 43-to-24 with just four minutes left.

The Tigers would run the balance of the clock off and hoist the trophey with the final score Ewing 43, Humphrey St. Francis 24.

Brett Kaczor led the Tigers with 118 yards and three rushing touchdowns while he went through the air for 160 more and three more touchdowns. Beau Fry would carry for 86 yards and a score while Phillip Thramer would rush for eleven yards.

Kaczor delt a 10 completions out of 11 attempts through the air for those 160 passing yards. Austin Kaczor would catch five passes for

86 yards and two scores, while Phillip Thramer would haul in three for 59 yards and Josiah Switzer would catch two passes for 15 yards and one touchdown.

Total yard were almost dead even as Ewing would put up 372 yards offense while the Flyers would hang 358 on the day.

The difference maker was the Flyers lack of conversions. Humphrey St. Francis would convert just 3-of-10 third down conversions, one-of-five on fourth down conversions and were just three-for-five in the red zone. Meanwhile the Tigers were six-of-seven in the red zone.

The Ewing Tigers finish the season a 12-and-one with their only loss coming to Elgin in Week Eight of the regular season. With the win, the Tigers put their first ever State Football Title on their shelves at Ewing.

(11/21/08) KBRX SPORTS — Clint Belina racked up 184 yards and five touchdowns in the first half and Howells drilled the Axtell Wildcats 46-to-21 to seal the Class D-1 state high school football championship.

Belina finished the game with video game like numbers. The Bobcat Bruiser ran for 310 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 37 carries.

Howells scored on its first five possessions with Belina going in on runs of 5, 2, 16, 4 and 3 yards and the Bobcats led 26-0 before Axtell got their first score on a touchdown run from quaterback Spencer Fecht.

The Bobcats scored on the final play of the second quarter when defensive end Cody Hegemann picked off a Fecht pass and rumbled 11 yards to it 40-7 at halftime.

Nobody scored in the third frame but Belina would score again with 9:11 to go on a 26 yard tounchdown run.

Axtell was able to scare up a couple of fourth quarter scores. Weston Gustafson scored on a 1-yard dive with 3:42 left and James Clark picked up a Howells fumble 12 seconds later and ran it in from 38 yards.

The Bobcats finished the game with 364 yards rushing and threw for just 13 yards while holding Axtell to just over 250 total yards.

It is Howells' sixth D-1 championship since 2000, its first since 2005.

(11/21/08) OMAHA, NE -- Creighton men's basketball improved to 2-0 with an 82-50 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday night. The hosts scored the first five points and never trailed while improving to 2-0 on the young season. UAPB is 0-3 as part of a season-opening 11-game road trip that has already seen them lose at Colorado and Texas A&M.

Creighton's 18 steals tied a school-record done three times previously, most recently Nov. 29, 2007 against Savannah State.

Creighton went on a 15-0 run late in the first half before a late basket by UAPB's Terrance Calvin ended the streak, putting the Bluejay lead at 45-26 at the half. CU shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the first half while holding Pine Bluff to 33.3 percent. The Golden Lions did lead on the glass, 21-14, at intermission.

Creighton's lead remained at 16 or larger the entire second half, with the 32-point final margin matching its largest of the night. Cavel Witter scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half, making all four shots from the floor in just nine second-half minutes.

Witter led four CU players in double-figures with 15 points while also matching a career-high with four steals. Justin Carter had 13 points while Kenny Lawson Jr. and Kenton Walker had 10 points apiece. CU shot 46.3 percent from the floor (25-54) and 79.4 percent (27-34) at the line in the win. Ten of the 11 Bluejays to see action scored, including a basket from senior walk-on Dustin Sitzmann to close the scoring.

UAPB was paced by 15 points from Terrance Calvin, the only Golden Lions player with more than nine points. Lebaron Weathers had a game-best nine rebounds to lead UAPB's 40-30 victory on the glass. The Lions shot 32 percent for the game (16-50) and 68 percent from the line (17-25). UAPB had just four assists against 30 turnovers while struggling against Bluejay pressure all night long.

Creighton returns to action on Saturday with a 2:05 pm home game against Oral Roberts. The game will be televised on KMTV and be broadcast on radio on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM).

(11/20/08) Austin, Texas – Jordan Larson’s 50th career double-double led three Huskers in double figures, but third-ranked Nebraska fell to No. 4 Texas, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 4,324 at Gregory Gymnasium.

Larson posted team highs in both kills (15) and digs (16) as the Huskers’ (25-2, 16-2 Big 12) saw their five-match win streak snapped. Tara Mueller and Amanda Gates joined Larson in double figures with 13 and 11 kills respectively, as Gates hit .450 and tied her career best in kills.

Texas (22-3, 15-2 Big 12) was led by outside hitter Destinee Hooker, who finished with a match-high 24 kills on .352 hitting and 17 digs. Hooker’s offensive night propelled the Longhorns to a .333 hitting percentage, the best night by a Husker opponent this season.

The win by Texas put the Longhorns percentage points behind Nebraska in the Big 12 race. The Huskers, who could have clinched the league title with a win on Wednesday, can grab at least a share of the title with wins in their final two regular-season matches.

The Huskers struggled in the opening set, as Hooker took over the set in a 25-19 Longhorn win. Hooker was nearly flawless, drilling 12 of the Longhorns’ 16 kills on .632 hitting, helping UT hit .469 in the set. Larson and Lindsey Licht had three kills apiece for the Huskers, who hit just .111 in the set. The teams battled early on before Texas broke a 9-all tie with three unanswered points, taking a 12-9 lead on Hooker’s sixth kill of the set to force a Husker timeout. Nebraska came right back with three straight points to even the score at 12 apiece after a Gates kill.  Texas came right back, winning three of the next four rallies, taking a 16-13 lead on another Hooker kill. The Huskers continued to chip away, pulling within 17-16, but kills from Hooker and Lauren Paolini pushed the margin to three points. NU made one last run, as kills from Kori Cooper and Gates pulled NU within 19-18, but NU would get no closer, as two Hooker ignited a 6-1 spurt to close out the set.

The Huskers held the Longhorns’ offense in check in the second set, posting a 25-21 victory to send the match to the break even at one set apiece. Mueller and Larson had four kills apiece, while the NU middle blocking duo of Cooper and Gates combined for five kills on seven swings. After spotting the Longhorns an early 4-1 lead, the Huskers roared back, winning five of the next six rallies to pull even at five on a block by Cooper and Licht. Trailing 9-7, the Huskers a Mueller kill and a Larson got the Huskers going on a 7-2 spurt, as the Huskers took a 14-11 lead after a Mueller kill. Nebraska eventually built the lead to 18-13 before Texas charged back, running off four straight points to pull within 18-17 after consecutive blocks by Juliann Faucette and Paolini and force a Husker timeout. Nebraska regrouped, as a Larson kill and two straight UT miscues gave NU a 21-17 lead, an advantage they would hold on to the rest of the set. Texas got within 23-21 before a Longhorn service error and a Cooper kill gave the Huskers the set.

In the third set, the Longhorns overcame an early deficit to top the Huskers, 25-22. Mueller had five kills, but the Huskers were held to .150 hitting, while Texas hit .355 behind Hooker, who had six kills and seven digs in the set. Nebraska took control early, using a 7-2 spurt to break an early tie and build an 11-6 margin after a pair of Mueller kills.  The Huskers pushed the lead to 16-12, only to see the Longhorns rally back, winning five of the next six rallies to tie the score at 17 on an Ashley Engle kill. The Huskers led 19-18 after a Mueller kill, but kills from Hooker and Paolini gave Texas a 20-19 lead, their first lead since the opening moments of the set.  The Huskers would forge ties at 20 and 21, but an Engle kill and two Huskers errors put the Longhorn at set point. Nebraska fought off one set point, but Paolini’s tip found the court to put Texas up two sets to one.

In the finale, NU overcame a 6-0 deficit only to see UT pull away late for a 25-22 win. Engle did most of her damage in the set, delivering six of her 12 kills in the set to help the Longhorns hit .412 as a team. The Huskers found themselves in a hole in the fourth set, spotting the Longhorns the first six points of the set after a Michelle Kocher ace. NU battled back, winning eight of the next 11 rallied to pull within 9-8 and force the Longhorns to take a timeout. Nebraska continued the charge, taking an 11-10 lead after a UT hitting error. Texas took a pair of two-point leads and was up 19-17 before Larson pulled NU even with a pair of kills. The teams were even at 21 before an Engle kill and a controversial net call spotted UT a 23-21 lead, forcing NU to take its final timeout. Trailing 24-21, NU fought off one match point before Engle closed out the match with a kill.

The Huskers return home on Saturday night, as they host Texas Tech on Senior Night beginning at 7 p.m. Amanda Gates, Jordan Larson and Rachel Schwartz will be honored in post-match ceremonies.

(11/20/08) Ft. Worth --- After an impressive first-half defensive performance, the Nebraska basketball team held strong during a long shooting slump after the break to earn a 62-50 victory over TCU on Wednesday at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

With the victory, the Huskers improved to 2-0 while the Horned Frogs fell to 1-3 on the young season. It was Nebraska’s first victory in the opening true road game of the year since 1995-96, snapping a streak of 12 straight losses in true road openers. The last time NU won its first game of the season away from Lincoln (true road game or neutral site) was the opening game of the 2002-03 campaign with a victory over Centenary at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Nebraska stretched its 13-point halftime lead to 16 points, 42-26, on Chris Balham’s lone basket of the game with 17:38 remaining in the second period before going cold. NU was outscored 13-4 over the next 9:49 as the Horned Frogs pulled within seven on Kevin Langford’s free throws with just under eight minutes to play. Toney McCray’s basket at the 16:27 mark started a difficult shooting stretch as the Huskers missed eight straight shots and had three turnovers.

Cookie Miller’s free throws snapped a 6:28 scoreless drought for the Huskers and McCray finally got Nebraska started again with a 3-pointer from the corner as the shot clock drained down to give NU a 10-point lead, 49-39, with 7:19 to play. From there, Brandon Richardson added a 3-pointer with just under five minutes to play, putting NU back up 11. Nebraska then hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal the Huskers’ first true road win in non-conference play under Coach Doc Sadler.

Nebraska hit just 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from the floor in the second frame, after draining 52 percent (13-of-25) in the opening period. The Huskers also held a one-rebound advantage, 31-30, on the glass and forced 14 turnover with nine steals while harassing TCU into hitting just 27.0 percent (10-of-37) from the field.

The Huskers’ defensive pressure in the first half proved to be the difference as TCU was held to just four baskets in 21 attempts (19.0 percent). The Horned Frogs were fortunate to be down only 13 points considering the poor shooting, but Nebraska put TCU shooters to the free throw line 22 times in the opening period. TCU hit 16 free throws in the frame to only trail 37-24 at the half.

Senior Paul Velander started the Huskers’ game-changing surge, hitting a 3-pointer with 5:38 remaining in the first half to push NU’s lead to five points, 26-21. The basket started an 11-3 run to end the frame with a pair of redshirt freshmen leading the way. Richardson added a pair of free throws and a basket and McCray pitched in a pair of jumpers while Velander added his third trey of the half with 14 seconds remaining for the double-digit lead at the break.

Velander led Nebraska with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from 3-point range, the only Husker to reach double digits. McCray and senior Steve Harley added nine points, with McCray adding five boards. Junior Ryan Anderson posted a game-high eight rebounds while adding six points and two steals.

Langford added a game-high 19 points, including hitting 13-of-18 from the free throw line in 37 minutes of play. He helped TCU connect on 27-of-38 from the stripe while Nebraska hit 16-of-21 from the line (76.2 percent).

Nebraska returns home for a 1 p.m. contest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. At the game, the Marines will be collecting new and unused toys for the “Toys for Tots” program for needy children in the Lincoln area. Fans are encouraged to bring a toy to donate before the game.

(11/19/08) LINCOLN, NE -- The Nebraska volleyball team heads to Austin, Texas, with a chance to earn a share of the Big 12 title Wednesday night, as the third-ranked Huskers meet the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns. First serve from Gregory Gymnasium is slated for 8 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Husker Sports Radio Network with John Baylor and Lindsay Peterson, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and Twister 93.3 FM in Omaha, and on the Internet at Huskers.com. Wednesday’s match will also be televised nationally on ESPNU with Beth Mowins and Karch Kiraly calling all of the action.

The Huskers (25-1, 16-1 Big 12) come into the final three matches of the season with an opportunity to earn their fifth straight Big 12 title and 30th conference crown in 33 seasons. With a win Wednesday, the Nebraska would capture a share of the league crown, as well as the league’s automatic bid for next month’s NCAA Tournament by virtue of their regular-season sweep of Texas. If Texas wins, the Huskers can still earn at least a share of the crown by winning its last two regular-season contests.

Nebraska put together its best offensive night of the year in sweeping Kansas Saturday night. The Huskers hit .447 as a team, while Jordan Larson’s 15 kills and 11 digs led three NU players with at least 10 kills. Nebraska, which became the first Big 12 team to sweep the Jayhawks in Lawrence, received strong efforts from middle blockers Amanda Gates and Kori Cooper, who combined for 14 kills without an error on just 19 swings.

Texas (21-3, 15-2 Big 12) comes off one of its best efforts of the season, winning a five-set thriller at No. 14 Kansas State on Saturday. The Longhorns are hitting a league-best .337 and have lost just once at home this season.

(11/18/08) LlNCOLN, NE – University of Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook announced Friday that four high school seniors have decided to join Husker volleyball program. The recruiting class features outside hitters Gina Mancuso (Omaha, Neb.) and Hannah Werth (Springfield, Ill.), libero Megan Pendergast (League City, Texas) and middle blocker Hayley Thramer (Ewing, Neb.). All four players have earned all-state accolades and are rated among the top-70 players in the country by PrepVolleyball.com.

“I think the Husker Nation is going to love watching this class develop over the next four years,” Cook said. “It is a group that combines skill and athleticism with great competitiveness. We believe it is one of the top-five classes in the country, and may be the most competitive group of players that we’ve recruited here.”

“As a class, it addresses many of our needs and adds depth to three positions,” Cook said. “We feel that Hannah, Gina and Megan can come in here and make an impact for us as early as next season.  Hannah and Megan are joining our program in January and that is a big statement for the impact they want to make in this program.”

(11/18/08) OMAHA, NE  - Dominique Kelley tied a career high with 16 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 3:10 left to help carry the Nebraska women's basketball team to a 72-67 road victory over Creighton at the Civic Auditorium on Monday night.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Bluejays slipped to 0-2 after losing their home debut.

Kelley, a 5-7 guard out of Lincoln Northeast High School, hit big shots throughout the night, connecting on 7-of-11 shots from the field including both of her three-point attempts. She also dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes for the Huskers.

Kelley may have hit the biggest shot of the night to give NU the edge for good in a game that featured 14 lead changes. However, it was fellow Nebraska native Yvonne Turner who made a string of huge plays down the stretch to put the Huskers in position to win.

Turner, who was straddled with foul trouble that allowed her on the floor for just four minutes in the first half, scored 11 of her 13 points in the second stanza to bring Nebraska back from a six-point second-half deficit.

With Nebraska trailing 59-56 with 7:21 to play, the Omaha native out of Bellevue East High School scored seven consecutive points for NU, including back-to-back three-pointers in a 1:01 span to tie the score at 63 with 3:43 left in the game.

Turner then hit Kelley on the left wing for the go-ahead three on NU's next possesion to have a hand in 10 straight points for the Huskers. After Creighton pulled within one at 68-67, Kala Kuhlmann and Turner connected on four consecutive free throws to seal NU's second straight win in the series over the Jays in Omaha.

Kuhlmann finished with eight points on the night, including a crucial defensive rebound with 1:02 left to set up her clutch free throws. Fellow junior Cory Montgomery also played a major role in the game, finishing with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Montgomery hit all three of her field goals in the game's final 7:21 to help NU outscore the Jays 18-8 down the stretch.

The Huskers also got a major contribution for the second straight game from sophomore Monique Whittaker. The Onalaska, Texas, native came off the bench in the first half to score 10 consecutive points to help NU bounce back from a 23-19 deficit to take a 31-30 lead with two minutes left in the half. Fellow sophomore Kaitlyn Burke added six points, including a pair of three-pointers, and three assists.

For the game, Nebraska hit 38.6 percent (22-57) of its shots from the field, including 9-of-21 from three-point range. Through NU's first two contests, the Huskers are averaging 10.5 made three-pointers per game on nearly 46 percent shooting. NU also connected on 19-of-30 free throws on the night, attempting 16 more shots than CU. The Huskers also outrebounded CU, 40-39, and both teams committed 16 turnovers.

Creighton hit 40.6 percent (24-64) of its attempts, including 6-of-16 three-pointers. The Jays also connected on 9-of-14 free throws.

Chevelle Herring, Turner's high school teammate at Bellevue East, led Creighton with a career-high 19 points on 9-of-22 shooting from the field. Herring had 13 points in the second half to help CU build a six-point second-half lead at 58-52 with 10:36 left. Herring's hot hand allowed the Jays to bounce back from a seven-point deficit after NU's Kelley drove for a short jumper on NU's opening possession of the second half.

Herring was also the only Jay to hit a field goal in the game's final 11 minutes. The Jays' offense was firing on all cylinders until an injury to senior guard Michelle Kaus with 9:36 left in the game. Kaus, who finished with nine points, including a trio of three-pointers, suffered an apparent injury to her left knee, which was heavily braced after suffering an ACL tear on March 15 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament semifinals.

Kristina Voss added 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks to help the Jays, while Megan Neuvirth pitched in 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Nebraska returns to home action at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday when the Huskers play host to Southern Utah. Tip-off is set for 5:05 p.m. All men's basketball ticket holders for the 1 p.m. tip against Arkansas-Pine Bluff will be admitted to Saturday's women's game for free. Saturday's game will also be the annual Toys for Tots collection at the Devaney Center. Fans are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy or cash donation to the game.

(11/17/08) KBRX, NE -- Nebraska senior quarterback Joe Ganz has been named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in leading the Huskers to a 56-28 victory over Kansas State on Saturday. Ganz accounted for 365 yards of total offense, including 270 passing yards and 95 rushing yards. He also threw for two touchdowns, while running for a pair of fourth-quarter scores.

The award marked the second career Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honor for Ganz. The Palos Heights, Ill., native also earned the award following last year’s Kansas State game, when Ganz set Nebraska records for passing yards (510), passing touchdowns (7) and total offense (528).

The 95 rushing yards were a career-high for Ganz and the most by a Nebraska quarterback since Jammal Lord’s 109-yard effort against Texas A&M in 2003. Ganz was one of five Huskers to rush for at least 45 yards in Saturday’s game as NU churned out its best rushing effort against a Big 12 foe in six seasons.

Ganz guided the Nebraska offense to a season-high 610 total yards against the Wildcats and NU’s 56 points were also the most this season. Under Ganz’s leadership, Nebraska has now topped 30 points nine times in 11 games this season and 12 times in his 14 career starts. Nebraska has passed for at least 200 yards in all 14 of Ganz’s career starts and he has out-yarded the opposing quarterback in nine of 10 career Big 12 starts.

The 365-yard total offense effort against Kansas State pushed Ganz’s season total offense total to an NU record 3,351 yards. He also established a new Nebraska season completions record against the Wildcats. Ganz is also on the verge of setting the season passing yardage and completion percentage record and is in position to break Nebraska records for season and career touchdown passes.

Ganz’s award marks the fourth time this season a Husker has won Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors. Ndamukong Suh received the defensive honor for his effort against Kansas, while Niles Paul (San Jose State) and Nate Swift (Virginia Tech) have earned special teams honors.

(11/17/08) CHADRON – After Chadron State’s Joel Schommer raced to the end zone on a 73-yard pass from quarterback Joe McLain, it might’ve looked as if the Eagles would cruise to a first round victory in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

It was anything but easy.

In a game that featured six combined turnovers, several injuries and over 700 yards of total offense, both Chadron State and Wayne State were pushed to the limit. The Eagles pushed back a little harder, though, and eeked out a 23-17 victory to advance into the second round and a matchup with Minnesota-Duluth next Saturday.

“It was a huge win for us and we’re very happy to be going on to the second round. Our kids played well and with a lot of composure,” CSC head coach Bill O’Boyle said.

The Eagles owned a 16-10 lead at halftime, in large part due to a strong ending in the second quarter. Chadron State’s Brett Gumb blocked a punt that the Wayne State punter recovered in the end zone for a safety and on the ensuing drive the Eagles went 71 yards, capped by a 15-yard pass from McLain to Isaac Stockton in the end zone.

In the first half, the CSC offensive unit had 233 total yards and the defense limited Wayne State to just 84 yards. However, the second half was a different story, as Wayne State took full advantage of its no-huddle offense by gaining 287 yards to CSC’s 119. But the Eagles’ defense stood tall when it mattered the most by creating three turnovers, two coming inside the 10-yard line.

“We knew all week how good Wayne State was on offense and we beat a good football team today,” O’Boyle said. “Our defense played lights out and they had huge turnovers for us that changed the game. It was a defensive struggle and they stepped up. I can’t say enough about our defensive staff and how great of a job they did to prepare for a very talented Wayne State offense.”

The Wildcats had no problem going down the field on their first drive of the second half, gaining 51 yards in just seven plays. A 25-yard toss from Wayne State quarterback Silas Fluellen to Logan Masters set the Wildcats up on the CSC 11-yard line, but on the next play Chadron State Aaron Bauer picked off Fluellen’s pass at the 5-yard line and returned it back to the 26.

The Eagles then drove 74 yards in nine plays to reach paydirt and McLain found Tyler Watson near the corner of the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown, giving the Eagles a 23-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

Wayne State marched the length of the field on its next drive and reached the 2-yard line, but the Eagles’ defense came up big again. Linebackers Zach Wheeler and Bauer combined to force the Wayne ball carrier to fumble and safety Nick Milani recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.

The teams traded punts on each of their next two possessions before the turnover bug bit Wayne State again. CSC’s Thomas Wells recovered a fumble at the 32-yard line early in the fourth quarter, but the CSC offense sputtered and punted the ball back to the Wildcats, who proceeded to drive the ball down the field once again, this time reaching the end zone with less than eight minutes remaining. The Wildcats converted a fourth and six at the Eagles’ 40-yard line and on the next play Fluellen hit Masters for a 30-yard touchdown to make the score 23-17.

The teams traded punts on their next possessions before CSC drove 26 yards to the Wayne State 20. The Eagles’ only first down in the quarter came on a 21-yard scramble by alternate Garrett Treffer, who was playing because McLain suffered an apparent shoulder injury near the end of the third quarter. The Eagles’ attempted a field goal three plays later, but Reno Blomquist blocked the kick and Wayne State gained some much-needed life with three minutes and 22 seconds left.

Fluellen hooked up with Brian Chapman for a 20-yard gain on Wayne’s first play of the drive, but after a fumble and three straight incomplete passes, the Wildcats’ hopes were dashed.

The Eagles took a knee on their next three plays, but Wayne State still had a last gasp of breath. Kevin Berg booted a 41-yard punt to the Wayne 5-yard line and Frederic Bruno had fans of both teams out of their seats as he raced down the sideline for a 55-yard return before CSC’s Trevor Hyatt pushed him out of bounds to end the game.

“Chadron State did a great job and I thought they were extremely well-prepared for us,” Wayne State coach Dan McLaughlin said. “We couldn’t move the ball at all in the first half. I thought their defense did a great job, and offensively, they did just enough. We thought our defense was good enough to shut them down but they were able to move the football and that’s a credit to their coaching staff. They had a great plan and did a great job.”

McLain completed 20 of 31 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon Harrington led the CSC receivers with eight catches for 72 yards. He is now the school record holder for most receptions in a season with 75.

Fluellen completed 17 of 40 passes for 236 yards and one TD. Masters led the Wildcat receivers with nine grabs for 118 yards.

Wayne State’s Ryan Reeves and CSC’s Hyatt each finished with 11 tackles.

St. Francis (12-0) advances to the championship game for the first time since 1996, when it won back-to-back titles. Elgin, last year's state runner-up, finishes 11-1.

The Eagles were also playing without 1,000-yard rusher Andrew Bauer, who was out with an injury, but Tyler Reestman still played a big roll for the Eagles as he has been taking the snaps since week two of the playoff schedule.

(11/13/08) Lincoln, NE -- Jordan Larson’s 16 kills led three Huskers in double figures, as the third-ranked Nebraska volleyball team swept Missouri, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14 Wednesday night at the NU Coliseum.

Larson totaled 16 kills and 13 digs for her 10th double-double of the year, as the Huskers (24-1, 15-1 Big 12) posted their 17th sweep of the season.

Tara Mueller added 13 kills and eight digs, while Kori Cooper chipped in 10 kills, as the Huskers hit .351 on the night and upped their home win streak to 84 matches. Sydney Anderson dished out 38 assists, while four of the Huskers’ five primary attackers hit at least .300 on the night.

“I thought it was a nice match tonight,” Nebraska Coach John Cook said. “I thought Missouri played well, and we had to battle really hard tonight. I was really proud of our team. They competed really well and we did some really good things tonight. We hit .350 and I thought it was a fun, entertaining match for the fans.”

The Huskers got a big boost from redshirt freshman Brooke Delano, who came off the bench to slam home four kills and add four blocks, including three solos in the right side hitter spot. Delano, who had 18 blocks in her previous 12 appearances, was clutch in the opening set, recording three straight stuffs to key a decisive 7-1 spurt that broke open the set.  Delano and Amanda Gates totaled four blocks apiece, while Gates put down five kills in seven swings to help the Huskers remain in first place in the Big 12.

“Brooke, as I’ve said all year, has had a very difficult role on our team (backing up all three positions),” Cook said. “The last few times she went in, it’s been late in the games and it’s hard to go in and do well. She started off great tonight and you can’t help but get excited. I know our whole team was excited with me.”

Larson said that Delano’s effort has been typical of a resilient Husker team that has battled throughout the year.

“I think that’s been the story of our team this entire season,” Larson said. “Everyone is stepping up and willing to give everything they have to this team. I just want to commend Brooke because I can’t imagine coming off the bench and knowing she has to play such a big role. She really did a great job and really helped fire up our team.”

Megan Wilson led Missouri (12-13, 6-9 Big 12) with 16 kills on .500 hitting, while Julianna Klein added 10 kills in a losing effort.

The Huskers return to action on Saturday night, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on the Jayhawks. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on selected Husker Sports Network stations.

(11/11/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The Ewing Tigers continued their winning ways on a nasty Monday night in the Nebraska High School Football Quarterfinals with a 42-to-six win over the St. Mary's Cardinals.

The Tigers got going early as with 9:28 to go in the first quarter, Brett Kaczor would strike for an 11-yard touchdown pass to Josiah Switzer. Phillip Thramer would kick the extra point and on the five play, 43 yard drive the Tigers took a seven-to-nothing lead.

The Cardinals would take the football back, but as they went four-and-out, the Beau Fry would block a St. Mary's punt setting up a short Ewing scoring drive. Fry would cap it off on a 7-yard touchdown run with 7:29 to go in the first quarter and with the Thramer extra point the Tigers led 14-to-nothing.

The Tigers would keep the pressure on and just two minutes later, following a Phillip Thramer interception, they would strike again. This time a one-yard Brett Kaczor touchdown run and with Thramer again adding the extra point and with 5:25 to go in the first quarter Ewing had built a 21-to-nothing lead.

Late in the first quarter the Tigers would go to the well again. A 65-yard scoring drive was capped off by Brett Kaczor's second touch down run. He would carry it in from four yards away and again Thramer would add the extra point pushing the Ewing lead to 28-to-nothing with just 52 seconds to go in the first quarter.

With the beginning of the second quarter came the rain. With the mercury falling into the upper 20's and rain falling both teams went on a scoring freeze, excuse the pun.

Nobody would even sniff the endzone until Ewing would score on a two yard Brett Kaczor touchdown run. His third rushing touchdown of the game came with just 23 seconds left in the third quarter and despite a blocked extra point Ewing led 34-to-nothing.

Brett Kaczor would score his fourth rushing touchdown with 7:10 to go in the game. The four-yard touchdown run along with the two-point conversion pushed the Tiger lead to 42-to-nothing.

St. Mary's would score their lone touchdown with 2:08 to go when St. Mary's would block a Ewing field goal attempt. Zach Sibbel would scoop up the loose ball and rumble 35-yards up the left sideline for the score and with a failed PAT the score went final at Ewing 42, St. Mary's six.

The Tigers will improve to 10-and-one on the season and move into the semi-finals on Saturday November 15th when they travel to Hayes Center to take on the 11-and-oh Hayes Center Cardinals.

St. Mary's concludes their season with a long winning streak. The Cardinals after opening one-and-two swept their district five-and-oh and with two playoff wins, finish the year at eight-and-three.

(11/11/08) KBRX SPORTS -- When the Axtell Wildcats came calling to Clearwater on Quarterfinal Monday, everyone expected a good contest but as Axtell dropped Clearwater/Orchard from the playoffs 40-to-36, this one went down as one for the ages.

The defenses would rule early as both the Cyclones and the Wildcats would go scoreless until Axtell would break the cap on a muffed punt by the Cyclones. The Wildcats would get a two-play, 25 yard drive and score on a one-yard touchdown run from Weston Gustafson. Casey Eggelston would kick the PAT and with 3:21 to go in the first period, the Wildcats led seven-to-nothing.

The lead would hold until Aaron Schleusener would fall on a Wildcat fumble. That would set up a ten play, 37 yard drive and with 7:50 to go in the half Luke Thiele would hit Daniel Filsinger with a eight-yard touchdown pass. Skyler Strope would run the two-point conversion in and the Cyclones took a eight-to-seven lead.

Axtell would drive deep into Cyclone territory on the next drive but would come away empty as Eggelston would miss a 26-yard field goal attempt and leaving the Cyclones in front eight-to-seven.

The Cylones would put their next score on the board late in the second quarter. After a Wildcat punt, the Cyclones would go six plays over 45 yards in just 56 seconds. Luke Thiele would go to the air again this time to Ethan Thiele for a seven-yard touchdown pass and with the two-point conversion by Skyler Strope the Cyclones led at the half 16-to-seven.

The third quarter would go much the same as the Wildcats would get the only points in the quarter on a 32-yard touchdown run by quaterback Spencer Fecht. The PAT kick was good and with 8:57 to go in the third quarter the lead had been narrowed to Cyclones 16, Wildcats 14.

When the fourth quarter started so did the offenses as between the two teams 36 points would appear on the board in the final 12 minutes.

The Cyclones would start the party off a second Axtell fumble. Brock Williby would cover the loose ball for the Cyclones setting up a third Thiele touchdown pass. With 7:17 to go in the game, Theile would hit Skyler Strope for the 18-yard score. Thiele would than hit Ethan Thiele with the two-point conversion pass pushing the Cyclones back in front 24-to-16.

Less than two minutes later, the Wildcats would answer. Specner Fecht would go deep to Trevor Fecht for a 45-yard touchdown pass. The PAT failed but Axtell had narrowed it to a 24-to-20 Cyclone lead.

No quiting now, as two plays later Luke Thiele would break free on a 60-yard touchdown run. Theile would go in with 5:46 to go in the game and despite a failed PAT the Cyclones led again 30-to-20.

Three plays later Fecht would strike again for the Wildcats. It would be the combination of Fecht to Fecht again this time for 15 yards and with 4:57 to go the lead had narrowed to 30-to-26.

Then disaster for the Cyclones.

Axtell would kick it away but Cyclones would fumble the kick at the one yard line and the Wildcats would score the go ahead touchdown one play later. Spencer Fecht would sneak the score in and with the PAT from Eggleston the Wildcats had the lead at 33-to-30 with just 4:52 to play.

The Cyclones would not go away.

Ten plays and 65 yards later, Luke Thiele would score his second rushing touchdown of the game and despite a failed PAT the Cyclones led 36-to-33 with just 1:29 to go.

They left too much time on the clock.

Axtell would go 65 yards on seven plays in 1:24 for the score. Spencer Fecht would score his second rushing touchdown of the game from five yards away and with the PAT Axtell led 40-to-36 with just five seconds to go in the game.

The Cyclones would have just time for one play but with the pass only covering about half the field the Cyclones would fall 40-to-36.

Between Luke Thiele and Spencer Fecht the quarterback play in this one was just sick.

Thiele would throw for three scores and rush for two more while putting up 130 yard on 21 carries and throwing for 77 yards on four completions of six attempts.

Fecht would score three times on the ground and throw for two more. He ran for 65 yard and threw for another 274.

That is 546 all-purpose yards among two quarterbacks.

Skyler Strope would have another good day with 195 yards on 42 carries.

With the loss the Cyclones drop from the playoffs but compiled a nine-and-two record in their first season.

The Axtell Wildcats improve to eight-and-three and move on to take on the Maxwell Wildcats on Saturday in Maxwell.

(11/10/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The 2008 NSAA State Vollyeball Tournament is on the horizon and three local teams have qualified for the big dance in Lincoln.

The Elkhorn Valley Lady Falcons have punched a ticket for the first time in the D1 ranks, despite having qualified in the C2 ranks in 2007. The Falcons are a number one seed with a 23-and-six record. They open up with the winner of the D1-6 District, the Bertrand Vikings. The Vikings come in at 22-and-seven. Those two team will meet on Thursday at 1:30PM at Lincoln Southwest High School. Other qualifiers in the D1 ranks include Leyton, Bancroft-Rosalie, Pawnee City, Sandhills/Thedford, Humphrey St. Francis and Giltner.

The Ewing Tigers have ran an unbeaten record to a three seed in the D2 rankings. The 33-and-oh Tigers will be trying to improve on back-to-back runner-up titles and will start with the 24-and-seven Greeley-Wolbach Titans. That contest will tip at 3:30PM and will be played at Lincoln North Star.

The Chambers Coyotes have qualified again for the D2 tournament. The Coyotes picked up the second of two wild cards and a five seed with their 27-and-four record. They will take on the other wild card team, the 21-and-two Hay Springs Hawks. Chambers has qualified now for the fouth time in a row and five times out of the last eight seasons but in 12 tournament appearnces dating back to 1982, they have never captured a state title. The Coyotes and Hawks have the late game on Thursday with an 8:30 opening serve on Thursday evening from Lincoln North Star.

Complete brackets are posted at the Three River Telco Scorecard.

(11/10/08) Lincoln, NE -– Behind a career night from Tara Mueller, third-ranked Nebraska rolled to an impressive sweep of No. 15 Kansas State, winning by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17 Saturday night.

Mueller, a sophomore outside hitter, established a career high for the second straight match, drilling home a match-high 20 kills on a career-best .615 hitting. Mueller, who had 19 kills in Wednesday’s five-set win at Texas A&M, was one of three Huskers in double figures, as Nebraska upped its record to 23-1 overall and 13-1 in conference action.

Cook said that Mueller’s effort was impressive, especially against a strong blocking team such as Kansas State.

“I think Tara was playing higher than that block tonight,” Nebraska Coach John Cook said. “She’s doing a great job of hitting and moving the ball around. Both Jordan (Larson) and Tara put on a clinic tonight and did a super job. I think Rita Liliom on K-State did really well too. They were three very good left side players tonight and all were hard to stop.”

Jordan Larson and Lindsey Licht finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Huskers posted their best offensive night in league play, hitting .352 against the Wildcats. Larson picked up her ninth double-double with 14 digs, tying Kayla Banwarth for match-high honors. Sydney Anderson dished out 42 assists and had two blocks and five digs, as NU hit .410 in the opening set and closed out the match by hitting .387 in the finale.

Liliom led Kansas State with 13 kills on .345 hitting and seven blocks in a losing effort, as the Wildcats saw their four-match win streak snapped.

Nebraska, which has won 83 straight home matches, improved to 6-0 against ranked teams in their first contest against a ranked foe since Sept. 18.

NU used Mueller’s strong offense performance to prevail in the opening set, 25-23. The Huskers hit .410 as a team with Mueller powering home nine kills in 13 swings. NU needed every one of those kills, as the Wildcats were nearly flawless themselves, hitting a blistering .548 and not committing a hitting error the entire set. Mueller got the Huskers off to a quick start, drilling home two quick kills as NU jumped to a 4-1 lead. KSU fought back and eventually took an 8-7 lead off a block by Megan Farr and JuliAnne Chisholm, only to see the Huskers run off three straight points, as Mueller slammed home a kill of a Larson pass to make it 10-8.  Nebraska eventually pushed the lead to 16-13, but the Wildcats chipped away, eventually tying it at 17 on a Liliom kill. The teams traded points until a KSU serving error, and Larson kill put NU ahead 21-19 to force a K-State timeout. The Wildcats, behind Natalya Korobkova’s seven kills on eight swings, kept fighting and were within 23-22 before NU pulled away. Kori Cooper put down a big kill to put the Huskers up 24-22 before Mueller’s ninth kill closed out the opening set.

“We found a way to win (the first set) tonight,” Cook said.  I don’t know how, but we hung in there and found a way to get big points when it mattered.”

The Huskers relied on their outside attack in the second set, as Mueller and Larson carried the Huskers to a 25-22 win to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. NU held the Wildcats to .150 hitting and recorded three blocks. Mueller continued her stellar play with eight kills on 12 swings, while Larson had four kills and eight digs. Nebraska took command early, using a 6-1 spurt to take a 12-7 lead after two Mueller kills and a pair of Wildcat miscues. Once again, K-State would charge back, using a 5-1 spurt of its own to pull within a point and eventually taking a 19-18 lead after a Chisholm kill. Down 20-19, Nebraska finally took command, winning five of the next seven rallies, breaking a 21-all tie on a Mueller kill and a Wildcat error before extending the lead to 24-21 lead after Licht’s kill tickled the net seemingly forever until dropping on the Wildcat side.

NU was firing on all cylinders in the finale, hitting .387 as team in rolling to a 25-17 win. Licht drilled home five kills, while Amanda Gates slammed home four kills on six swings and added a block. Strong serving from Anderson got the Huskers off to a quick start, as her ace ignited a 6-1 spurt to open the set. KSU fought to within 7-5, but a service error and two straight attack errors allowed NU to double up the score and force the second timeout of the set. The Huskers put the set away moments later, using a 5-0 spurt off Mueller’s serve to push the margin to 19-12 after a Licht kill. Nebraska eventually pushed the lead to as many as nine points before Mueller’s final swing of the night gave the Huskers their 16 th sweep of the season.

Korobkova added 12 kills for Kansas State(21-5, 11-4 Big 12), as the Wildcats cooled off after the blistering first set and saw their four-match win streak snapped.

The Huskers return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 12, when the Huskers play host to the Missouri Tigers. First serve at the NU Coliseum is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be carried on the Husker Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and Twister 93.3 FM in Omaha, and on Huskers.com.

(11/07/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The St. Mary's Cardinals locked in again on Thursday night for a shot at the district title and just like 2007 on the other side of the net was the Coleridge Bulldogs. And just like 2007 the Cardinals fell to the Bulldogs 25-11, 18-25, 25-13, 25-10.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals got another great effort from junior Molly Gallagher as she led the Cardinal attack with 10 kills in four games. Avery Schneider and Caitlin Podany both served for six points each in the loss.

The Bulldogs would get 11 kills from Kelsey Papenhausen and ten more from Taylor Olson whilt Morgan Arduser would serve from and outstanding 16 points for the four game win.

The Cardinals will end the 2007 season at 12-and-13 while the Coleridge Bulldogs will move on to the 2008 NSAA State Volleyball Tournament and would appear to be an eight seed going into play on Thursday November 12th in Lincoln.

(11/07/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The Nebraska Football Quarterfinals get going on Monday and a handful of local teams are still in the hunt.

The Plainview Pirates will be back in their home port on Monday when the Ravenna Blue Jays come calling for a 4:00PM kick-off. The Pirates got a second overtime field goal to defeated a pesky Hartington Cedar Catholic team on Wednesday while Ravenna took their revenge on the Kearney Catholic Stars 41-to-21.

The Clearwater/Orchard Cyclones are still in the hunt for a D1 title after they survived a trip to Franklin on Wednesday. Coming of a 31-to-20 win over the Flyers, the Cyclones invite the Axtell Wildcats into Clearwater on Monday for a 2:00PM showdown. The Wildcats used a late Newman Grove fumble to defeat the Blue Jays 28-to-20.

The Carlie Wells Crew at Elgin continues to roll along in the D2 bracket. After being defeated by the Chambers Coyotes in the D2 State Finals last year the Eagles have scored an average of 52 points per game in the first two rounds while allowing just 19. The Eagles host the Allen Eagles on Friday afternoon in a 4:30PM kickoff. The Allen Eagles knocked off a good Sterling team 26-to-22 to move on to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile the Ewing Tigers have been mowing through the west half of the D2 field. After destroying Hyannis 54-to-14 they pounded Loomis on the road Wednesday 63-to34. They prepare for a rematch with the St. Mary's Cardinals on Wednesday. The Cardinals have been the nail bitter in the west. After escaping the first round with a 42-to-39 win over the Chambers Coyotes, they took an overtime win 44-to-38 from Sargent on Wednesday. These two teams did meet earlier in the season when the Tigers rolled the Cardinals 41-to-six back on the 5th of September. The Cardinals have improved greatly since week one and this should be a dandy matchup for the quarterfinals.

(11/07/08) LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nov. 15 game between Nebraska and Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan., will begin at 2:35 p.m.

The Kansas State Athletics Department announced the game time Thursday.

The Nebraska-Kansas State game was not chosen to be part of the Big 12's television package, so Wildcat officials are exploring a
pay-per-view cable option. But the details of a pay-per-view arrangement won't be completed until at least Friday.

Nebraska's November 28 home game against Colorado will be carried nationally on ABC, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

(11/06/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The Clearwater/Orchard Cyclones blew into Franklin with a north wind on Wednesday afternoon for a Sweet 16 Round of High School Football Playoffs and despite a slow start the Cyclones shot down the Flyers of Franklin 31-to-20.

The Flyers got on the scoreboard early as they took the opening drive 58 yards on four plays for the first touchdown of the game. The score came on a 26-yard touchdown run by Aaron Davis and with 10:46 to go in the first quarter the Flyers led eight-to-nothing.

The Flyers would go to the well again mid-way into the first quarter, when Aaron Davis would score again on a 14-yard touchdown run. The five play, 35-yard drive would end with 4:41 to go in the first quarter, and despite a failed PAT the Flyers led 14-to-nothing early.
The Cyclones would get started in the second quarter.

Austin Schleusener would recover a Franklin fumble and four plays later Skyler Strope would haul in a touchdown from four yards out. Strope would throw to Daniel Filsinger for the two-point conversion and with 7:25 to go in the half Franklin led 14-to-eight.

The lead would not last much longer.

Two plays into the next Franklin drive, quarterback Logan James would toss an interception to the Cyclones' Daniel Filsinger. Clearwater/Orchard would score on the next play, as Skyler Strope would haul in his second touchdown. Strope would strike from 48 yards out and catch a two-point conversion pass from Luke Thiele. That brought Clearwater/Orchard in front 16-to-14 with 6:29 to go in the half.

The Cyclones would never trail again.

The Cyclones went to the well again with 32-seconds to go in the half. Following a Franklin punt, Luke Thiele would carry in a 23-yard touchdown run and kick the PAT, taking the Cyclones to a 23-to-14 lead at the half.

Franklin would threaten to rally mid-way through the 3rd quarter when Aaron Davis ran for his third touchdown of the game on a nine-yard carry. The score would come with 4:58 to go in the third and Franklin had pulled within 13 points at 23-to-20.

That would not be nearly enough.

Following a Franklin punt, the Cyclones would put together a nine-play, 45-yard scoring drive that would be capped off by Luke Thiele's second touchdown run. The score came from five yards away with just 3:07 to go in the fourth quarter and included a rushing two-point conversion by Michael Jensen to seal the deal.

The Cyclones would coast home to a 31-to-20 win.

Three Franklin turnovers and 70 yards in penalties would lead to 16 Cyclone points while three Clearwater/Orchard turnovers led to three Franklin punts.

Luke Thiele would lead the Cyclone offense rushing for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries while Skyler Strope would go for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Thiele would also complete five-of-12 passes for 45 yards in the win.

With the win, the Cyclones improve to nine-and-one on the year and will come home on Monday November 11th to host the Axtell Wildcats.

(11/06/08) CHADRON, NE -- The Chadron State College football team will try to put the frosting on another great regular season Saturday when it hosts Western State College in the final game on the schedule. The Eagles will then set their sights on the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Kickoff for the season finale will be at noon, following the introduction of the Eagles’ 19 seniors.

The Eagles are 9-1 for the season and 8-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They clinched the conference title last Saturday by downing a stubborn Mesa State team 27-16.

Western State is 2-7 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The Mountaineers played just one non-conference game, losing to Emporia State of Kansas 43-0 on Aug. 30. Their victories were over the two New Mexico teams in the RMAC in late September. They edged Highlands 34-31 and overwhelmed Western New Mexico 53-24.

Some of the Mountaineers’ setbacks have been by narrow margins. Both Fort Lewis and Colorado State-Pueblo won by 20-17 scores. Adams State took a 16-10 decision last Saturday.

The difference has been larger in the other games. Nebraska-Kearney prevailed 44-15, Colorado Mines won 41-13 and Mesa State took a 29-19 verdict.

Like most of the RMAC teams, the Mountaineers have thrown the ball better than they have run it. Quarterback Cameron Merrill has completed 160 of 272 passes (58.8 percent) for 1,938 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s been intercepted eight times.

Merrill’s favorite receiver is Shaun Suttorp, a 6-0, 175-pound sophomore who has caught 62 passes for 729 yards and four TDs. J.R. Finley is next with 23 catches for 293. One of Western’s featured players at the start of the season, wide receiver Dusten Copeland, has played in just six games and caught 12 passes this year after he caught 86 passes for a conference-high 1,156 yards for a year ago.
While Western often takes to the air, it has one of the conference’s most successful running backs in Nathan Acrey, a 5-11, 215-pound senior who has rushed 175 times for 825 yards and scored nine of the team’s 10 touchdowns on the ground. Merrill, Acrey and Finley are the only seniors who start on offense.

The Mountaineers have given up about 1,000 more yards than they have gained. They operate out of a 3-4 defense, similar to what the Eagles frequently use.

Western is coached by Pat Stewart, who is in his third year at the Gunnison school. Before going there, he was an assistant at Nebraska-Kearney. Former CSC graduate assistant Kevin Stanley, once a standout lineman at Western, is the team’s defensive line coach.
The Eagles apparently survived their “big” games against Colorado Mines and Mesa State the past two weeks without significant injuries, coach Bill O’Boyle said Monday. It was feared that standout center Chance Galey suffered a broken bone in his hand against Mesa State, but the x-rays early this week did not show a fracture.

Chadron State leads the conference where it counts most—on the scoreboard. The Eagles are averaging 36.2 points per game and giving up 16.6. They also set the pace when the yardstick is used. They are averaging 385.8 yards per game and yielding 247.8.
After coming up with 15 quarterback sacks the past two games, the Eagles lead the nation in that category. They have 43 through 10 games and have given up just nine.

CSC’s red zone performances also are noteworthy. The Eagles have come away with points 46 of the 52 times (88.5 percent) they’ve reached the 20-yard line and have allowed the rivals to scored 13 of 20 times (65.0 percent).

(11/06/08) KBRX SPORTS -- With the Nebraska High School Volleyball Sub-District and District finals slated for Thursday and Friday, the quest for a trip to Lincoln now becomes all about the in, the out and the still about.

As the field for volleyball narrows quickly before the final eight are invited to Lincoln, two area teams are still riding hopes of a District Championship and a gaurenteed ticket to state.

The Elkhorn Valley Falcons look like a sure thing in the D1 field at this point. The Falcons battle the Bloomfield Bees on Thursday night at Neligh-Oakdale for the D1-4 District Final. If the Bees defeat the Falcons, the Bees enter the tournament as a District Champion and the Falcons more than likely would enter on a wildcard birth as they are ranked number one in the D1 Power Points going into Thursday night action.

The Ewing Tigers have yet to lose a match on the 2008 season as they take their 32-and- oh record to Norfolk Catholic on Thursday night to battle the 25-and-three Dodge Pirates for the D2-3 District Final. First serve is slated for 7:00PM Thursday night.

The St. Mary's Cardinals are still in the hunt for a ticket to Lincoln. They take a 12-and-12 record to Wasua High School on Thursday night to battle the 13-and-seven Coleridge Bulldogs for the D2-4 District title. First serve is scheduled for 7:00PM in Wasua.

As for the "still about," the Chambers Coyotes are awaiting their fate as they did in 2007. The Coyotes sit 5th in the power point rankings as of Thursday morning and will need some things to happen to continue their season. The Coyotes need district wins from Ewing, defending D2 Champion Paxton and from Clay Center. Losses by any of those three could turn into a problem.

As the Tigers battle the Dodge Pirates, the Paxton Tigers take on the Brady Eagles in a district final on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Clay Center plays their Sub-District Final on Thursday against Pleasanton and will not see a District Final until Friday.

You can go ahead and start biting your nails now in the D2 ranks.

The 2008 NSAA State Volleyball Tournament opens on Thursday November 13th as this year the tournament is split into three days and includes Consolation matches.

(11/04/08) -- The O'Neill Eagles made the trip to Burwell on Monday night and despite playing very tough droped out of the C1-10 Sub-District in a loss to Ord 26-24, 25-9, 25-19.

Before the loss to Ord, the Eagles had to get by the Ainsworth Bulldogs in the play-in game and did so 25-17, 25-9, 25-15.

Alex Hedlund would lead the way for the Eagles with nine kills across the three game spread. Bobbi Walters would add four more while Heidi Hostert, Bergan Heese, Katie Dainelson and Makayla Havranek picked up one kill each. In service, it was all about Jenna Fernau. She would serve 15-of-15 for 13 points, six aces, and a string of 12 points in a row in Game Two. Alex Hedlund would get 12 service points of her own while Kelsey Appleby would add seven and Heidi Hostert grabbed six.

The Bulldogs were led by Jennifer Lyons and Kirsten Peterson with four kills each while Hayley Harthoorn would grab five service points in the loss.

In the second game, the Eagles would have a bit of a bigger task with the C1 defending State Champion, the Ord Chanticleers.

Ord built an early lead in game one pulling in front of the Eagles 18-to-12 early on, but then Kelsey Appleby hit the service line and a hot streak. The Chanticleers would be sent reeling as Appleby would serve for eight points in a row including three aces and suddenly the Eagles had built a 20-to-18 lead. O'Neill would string that lead all the way to 24-to-22 before Abby Welniak would rattle off four service points and three aces to defeat O'Neill in game one 26-to-24. From there on out the Ord vetrerans would take hold defeating the Eagles in the next two games 25-to-nine and 25-to-19.

The Chants would go several places for kills including Abby Welniak and Kendra Novotny with 10 each. McKenzie Daily added nine, while Brittney Ries would add five and Kelcie Pelton added four. Ord would get great service from Desiree Ericson as she was 20-of-22 from the service line with 19 points and four service aces. Reis added 14 more points for the Chants.

The Eagles played hard, getting seven kills from Alex Hedlund and six more from Bobbi Walters. Heidi Hostert added four ace blocks while Kelsey Appleby handled the service department with a 20-for-20 effort and 15 points.

The Eagles finish the season at six-and-21 but lose just one senior in Makayla Havranek.

(11/04/08) KBRX SPORTS -- The C2-8 Volleyball Sub-District proved to be a dandy on Monday night as Plainview handled Neligh-Oakdale in the play-in game 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 17-25, 15-13. Creighton would defeat West Holt in a five game slugfest 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13. Lutheran High Northeast Eagles would bounce Plainview in the night cap 27-25, 25-13, 25-22.

The Plainview Pirates opened the show with a five game win over Neligh-Oakdale 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 17-25, 15-13. The Lady Pirates would spread the attacks around in this one. Ashlee Johnston would nail down seven while Camille Friedrich and Michelle Sauser would add six each, and Paige Anderson would chip in five. Friedrich would knock-out 11 service points for the Pirates including three aces whtil Ashley Mosel would add ten service points of her own.

Abby Kallhoff and Samantha Henn would go to the well for nine kills each for the Lady Warriors while Ashley Pofahl added 13 service points in the loss.

Game two between the Creighton Bulldogs and the West Holt Huskies would go down as a classic as Creighton got the five game win 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13.

West Holt would win the first two games behind Hannah Dostal and her five kills with Jodi Schroeder chipping in four more, but it was the service that was key. Becky Frerichs would serve for 10 points in the first two games. That included two aces in game two.

Creighton, down two games to none had a hole to fill and they did it well winning the second two games behind a red-hot attack streak from Brandi Sorenson. She would knock out nine kills in the next two games to bring the contest to a deciding game five and a Creighton win 23-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13.

Sorsenson would lead the Bulldogs with 14 kills on the night while Amber Thomas would chip in ten and Alyssa Kruse added eight. Creighton picked up 12 service points from Thomas, 11 from Ally VonSeggern and ten each from Sarah Fanta and Jessica Ripp.

West Holt got attacking from all over the place. Hannah Dostal carded 10 in five games, while Rachel Schaaf added eight, Jodi Schroeder added seven and Shalee Weber and Becky Frerichs added six each. Frerichs showed up at the service line again with 18 service points on three aces.

With the lost the Huskies end their season at 16-and-nine while Creighton goes on to dual the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles on Tuesday night for the final of the C2-8 Sub-District.
