The planter I had that survived the summer.

The time to spruce up your yard is now, and planting some new foliage is the perfect way to transform the look. Due to a push from some friends (my husband calls them my red-flag friends), I dabbled into flowers this spring. I am by no means an expert, but I’ve been trying to improve. This week, I took it to an expert. I visited with Kenny Wettlaufer from Wettlaufer Landscapes & Garden Center in Atkinson. I want to thank Kenny for taking the time to help me with this as I thought of the idea while getting ready on Saturday morning and dropped by about an hour later.

Kenny mentioned that now and for the next couple of weeks is the time to purchase and plant for the fall season. With the cool nights, you won’t have to water as much so less maintenance too! Here are the top five fall florals to plant.

5. Rose

Easy Elegance Sunrise Sunset Roses

Roses are the gift that keep on giving. Currently, roses are going through another cycle of blooming due to the cooler nights. Roses are easy to care for, and this particular brand, Easy Elegance, is naturally disease resistance and will bloom until frost.

Sedum Autumn Fire

4. Sedum Autumn Fire

Sedum Autumn Fire is a great choice because as the season changes, the color also changes. Starting as pink flowers, as the season progresses, the colors will change to rusty orange then to a coppery bronze. These are also great for the soil of the sandhills as they are able to tolerate the sandy conditions as long as it is well-drained. They work well in rock gardens and are able to be propagated (reproduced through planting a leaf in the soil) easily.

3. Ornamental Grasses

Graceful Grasses Toffee Twist

If you have an area that needs to be filled, now is the time to plant those ornamental grasses. Because of our frigid winters, the Graceful Grasses Toffee Twist is an annual that can grow up to 24 inches. It can be used for landscaping in the ground or in a container. While the Toffee Twist won’t grow through the winter, it can still be used as decoration through the spring.

Mammoth Lavender Daisy Garden Mums

2. Mums

The particular chrysanthemums pictured are Mammoth Red Daisy Garden Mums and Mammoth

Lavender Daisy Garden Mums. Mums are perennials that are able to withstand cold winters. The best part about these is their versatile uses such as edging, planters, or large areas. Both flowers grow quickly and are sure to add color to your space!

Russian Sage

1.Russian Sage

Russian Sage has brilliant color and crazy texture to fill your landscaping needs. The plant does well in heat and brings a wonderful aroma. It also pairs well with the number three ornamental grasses. Russian Sage will continue blooming when other perennials start to fade.

Bonus: Trees

Right now is also the perfect time to plant trees. Cool nights allow the root system to take and require less water. Be prepared for transplant shock after planting your tree of choice.
