Wakefield named Blue Sky Media Athlete of the Month

ALVA, Okla. – Northwestern Oklahoma State University cowboy Riley Wakefield and women’s golfer Brittani Casement have been named the Blue Sky Media October Athletes of the Month.

The pair receive the honor as recognition for their work within their area of competition. Nominees for the aware are selected by Northwestern head coaches and representatives from Blue Sky Media, the radio affiliate of Northwestern Athletics.

Not only is Wakefield known among the collegiate rodeo ranks, but the sophomore is considered one of the top up-and-coming young Cowboys around. In the final event of the fall season, Wakefield was the men’s all-around and tie down champion at the Ranger Rodeo, helping him be recognized as the Male Athlete of the Month.

With the help of the O’Neil, Nebraska native, the Northwestern men retained the Ranger Rodeo title, moving them into first place in the current National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Central Region standings.

Casement, recognized as the Female Athlete of the Month, was named the Great American Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week on October 24, the first such honor in program history. The senior received the GAC honor after she tied the lowest two-round score in Northwestern women’s golf history with a 149 (74-75) for a fifth place finish at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Casement’s first round 74 at the event as tied the second lowest round ever by a Lady Ranger golfer.

Both the rodeo and golf programs are on their winter break from competition and will fire up their schedules early in the Spring semester.
